PACIFIC CONVERSATION WITH SPREP
Greening the
Samoa 2019
Pacific Games!
From 7–22 July, Samoa will host over 4,000 athletes and thousands of avid sports fans. As a first for major
international sporting events in the Pacific region, Samoa is “Greening the Games” by reducing the consumption
of single-use plastic bottles, flatware, and polystyrene packaging at the sporting venues nationwide. The
Greening the Games initiative will act as a catalyst to raise awareness and encourage positive environmental
behaviour, not only in Samoa, but in all participating countries.
What is happening?
Sports venue canteens will be single-use plastic-free.
There will be responsible waste collection.
Working with the Samoan Government’s ‘2 Million Trees’ campaign to plant trees that will offset the events’
carbon footprint.
Community clean-up events where everyone can help to keep ‘Samoa Clean and Plastic Free’.
Coming to the Samoa 2019 Pacific Games?
Here are some easy ways you can keep Samoa clean and plastic free:
Choose to use a reusable water bottle, reusable bag and reusable food containers.
Plant a tree to offset your carbon footprint.
Dispose of any waste in the provided waste and recycling bins.
