A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
Since April 2020, every issue of Islands Business has been written and planned
through the lens of the coronavirus pandemic and the impact it is having on
our communities, economies, health and education systems, and businesses of
every size.
Managing Director / Publisher
Samisoni Pareti Despite improved vaccine access and uptake across the region, the way that
the Delta variant is taking hold in Australia and New Zealand, and its continued

about the dramatic surge in cases there), means COVID and its impacts will
continue to dominate coverage for some time to come.
Designer But of course there is another critical issue that underpins coverage of our
Dick Lee region and outlook for the future—climate change—and the Pacific islands’ par-

Contributors
In this month’s issue you will read an update from long time Pacific negotiator
Alipate Pareti
and expert on international climate change matters, Dr Ian Fry, on the recently-
Ambassador Kaliopate Tavola
released International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report reviewing the
Dennis Rounds
physical science of climate change. Dr Fry also highlights some of the key issues
Dr Ian Fry
for the Pacific at the upcoming COP26 meeting, and gives the lay of the land in

terms of commitments (and deficiencies) of the world’s largest emitters.
Kevin McQuillan
Lagipoiva Cherelle Jackson From the Marshall Islands we also carry a report on climate change adaption
Makereta Komai based on observations from the powerful duo of former President Hilda Heine
Netani Rika and her daughter, climate envoy Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner. They also speak to the
Nic Maclellan IPCC report, and share powerful messages about local resilience, and cultural
responses, and encouragingly, about the role that young Pacific islanders (both
locally based and diaspora communities) are taking on. If anything gives us hope
for the future, it is the emergence of this generation of leaders and the work
Islands Business is published monthly by they are doing at all levels to effect change.
