Fiji hotels go local in F$74 million spent

         on fresh produce, says IFC

         By Dionisia Tabureguci
A new study has shown that Fijian hotels
and resorts now spend almost half their
fresh produce budgets in the local market,
dispelling a long held assumption that they
         buy mostly from overseas.
The study, led by the International
         Finance Corporation (IFC) in partnership
with Fiji’s Ministry of Agriculture (MoA)
and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and
Tourism (MITT), was funded by the Gov-
ernment of Australia and revealed that
hotel and resorts in Fiji’s main tourism
areas spent over F$74 million (US$36.4
million) buying fresh produce in 2017.
And 48 per cent of that was spent on lo-
         cally sourced items.
The study, released in a publication
titled: ‘From Farm to the Tourist’s Table,’
was launched in Fiji last month by IFC’s
